Four jailed for felling trees in wildlife sanctuary

SANDAKAN: Four undocumented foreign men were jailed eight months each Friday for illegally felling trees and trespassing in the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nasir Abdullah, Parihin Ariffin, Arif Ariffin and Firman Tompo pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Roslinda Razali.

They committed the offences at Lot 4 of the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary at 11.31am on Aug 11.

They were charged under Sections 17(1)(a) and 15(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, punishable under amended Subsections 17(3) and 15(4), read with Section 96(7) of the same Enactment.

Wildlife Department prosecuting officer Primus Lambut prosecuted, while the unrepresented men were ordered referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentences.
