London Pride live: Madonna rumoured to appear on main stage as thousands march in LGBTQ+ parade

Madonna is rumoured to make an appearance on the main stage of Pride in London in what would be a major surprise for the capital’s historic parade.

Thousands of activists have marched in the procession, which began at midday with Mayor of London among those at the front of the march chanting “Happy Pride”.

The artist, an icon of the LGBT+ community, was in London on Friday attending an extravagant launch party for her highly-anticipated album CONFESSIONS II. While singer MNEK is tipped to headline the Trafalgar Square main stage, rumours remain that the “Holiday” singer could make an appearance.

The parade follows an iconic route through London landmarks, including Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. It is expected to finish around 6pm in Whitehall.

Around 1.8 million people had been expected to descend upon the capital in a day of celebration and activism for LGBT+ communities.

As part of our campaign championing people in Pride Month, The Independent has again partnered with Pride in London and launched our iconic Pride List for 2026, which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community’s biggest trailblazers.

Thousands of activists marched through London in the capital’s LGBTQ+ Pride parade as campaigners issued a stark warning about trans rights.

Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan was among those at the front of the Pride in London march on Saturday and led activists in a chant of “Happy Pride” as the parade began.

More than 35,000 marchers from more than 600 groups took part in the procession from Hyde Park Corner to Whitehall Place via Piccadilly, with an audience of more than a million expected to flock to the capital for celebrations.

Organisers confirm popstar Madonna will not attend Pride today

18:35 , Maira Butt

Madonna will not be attending the Pride in London event today, organisers said on Saturday.

There had been speculation that the 67-year-old singer was going to appear at the LGBT+ celebration in London’s Trafalgar Square.

“In response to the rumours, we can confirm that Madonna will not be appearing or performing at Pride in London,” the organisation wrote in a post on social media on Saturday.

“We have two fantastic headliners at Trafalgar Square to conclude a brilliant day of protest and celebration.”

It is understood that there had been communication between organisers and Madonna but that she was never a confirmed attendee.

Zack Polanski: Pride is a moment to celebrate LGBTQ+ rights – and stand up for them too

18:26 , Maira Butt

From the outside, Pride can often look like one big party. Rainbow flags, face paint, fabulous outfits and a bit of a disco.

And as someone who enjoys a dance, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Moments of shared joy in clubs, on dancefloors and at parties are so important for our community, for coming together in the face of hatred, discrimination and attempts to divide us.

But it’s important to remember that, fundamentally, Pride is a protest movement. It started in New York in 1969, in response to police harassment and brutality at the Stonewall Inn, after police repeatedly raided the small gay dive bar under the guise of enforcing discriminatory laws.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski writes for The Independent:

Stonewall co-founder warns government attack on trans rights could impact other rights

Stonewall’s co-founder has warned that the government are attacking trans rights and this could impact other LGBTQ+ rights.

Co-founder of Stonewall and LGBTQ+ activist Lisa Power said: “Adversity is meant to shatter us but it can make us stronger as it did in the 80s.

“Right now, we have a government and institutions meant to defend our rights that are attacking trans people’s rights, and the rest of ours will follow.”

Pride in London is a majority volunteer-led organisation responsible for delivering the capital’s flagship LGBTQ+ Pride parade and events since 2013.

Pride in London CEO calls for 2026 to be 'the most inclusive Pride' yet

16:45 , Bryony Gooch

Pride in London interim chief executive Rebecca Paisis said: “We want 2026 to be the most inclusive Pride in London event yet.

“Our movement has always been built on many voices becoming one united front — from the people who marched in 1972 to those joining us for the first time this year. That’s where our power lies.

“As LGBTQ+ people, we’ve never been strangers to adversity, but neither are we strangers to collective action.

“This year’s campaign is a reminder that whilst the community often faces challenges in isolation, it is by coming together that we can change history.”

Pride in London centres urgency of gender-affirming care waiting lists and rising hate crimes

16:30 , Bryony Gooch

Pride in London have taken the opportunity to flag the importance of gender affirming care in the midst of the parade.

A spokesperson for Pride in London said: “The urgency is clear: NHS gender-affirming care waiting lists now exceed four years in some regions while a comprehensive trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy remains uncodified into law despite a 2018 government pledge.

“At the same time, the community infrastructure LGBTQ+ people rely on is shrinking — since 2006, 58 per cent of London’s LGBTQ+ venues have closed.

“Together, these gaps in care, protection and safe spaces are unfolding amid continued hostility, with Home Office figures showing that more than 18,000 hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation were reported to police in 2025.”

'Pride needs to have an underlying level of protest'

14:16 , Stephanie Cockroft

A gay rights activist said the Pride in London march was important with “rights being taken away from trans people” in the UK.

Speaking at the front of the parade, Julian Hows, 70, who was expelled from school for early gay rights activism in 1971, told the Press Association: “Pride is important every year.

“I’ve been coming to Pride marches since 1972 when the policemen outnumbered the marchers.

“It’s a visible display, a visible manifestation of all our Christmases, our Easters, our whatever, all rolled up into one.”

Mr Hows, who wore a rainbow-coloured waistcoat with Abseil Against Section 28 and Gay Liberation Front pins, added: “Pride is also important because it needs to have an underlying level of protest, and you can see the freedoms that we have can so easily be taken away.

“We also always need to push further because there’s always somewhere where our rights are being taken away.

“Whether it’s in this country with Reform, whether it’s this country with rights being taken away from trans people, whether it’s abroad in other countries.”

LGBTQ+ activist accuses Fifa of 'doing nothing' about countries banning gay footballers at World Cup

13:22 , Bryony Gooch

Activist Peter Tatchell has said Fifa is “doing nothing” about 11 countries banning gay footballers at the World Cup.

Mr Tatchell was among those at the front of the Pride in London march and carried a banner which said: “World Cup – 11 countries ban gay footballers – shame!”

The activist said: “We’re marching in London Pride today to highlight the fact that at the World Cup, which is ongoing right now, 11 countries ban gay footballers from their team – that’s against Fifa rules, but Fifa is doing nothing.”

Speaking at the front of the march, he added: “This year’s Pride is as important as ever.

“Particularly now that Reform councils across the country are banning Pride flags … wanting to remove books from shelves.

“That is very dangerous, very threatening to all of us.”

Increased police presence across central London during the parade

11:31 , Bryony Gooch

Those partaking in Pride can expect an increased police presence across central London this weekend during the parade.

Deputy assistant commissioner Jon Savell, who is leading the policing operation for Pride in London, said: “The public can expect to see a significant policing presence across central London on Saturday. Officers will be on hand to ensure that those attending Pride celebrations can do so safely and securely.

“Our priority is to provide a visible, proportionate and effective policing presence that is ready to respond swiftly to any incidents.

“Pride is hugely significant for LGBT+ communities and those attending should be able to do so free from discrimination, abuse or fear. There will be no tolerance of hate crime – we urge anyone who is a victim of it to speak to an officer immediately so we can take action.

“We are expecting a very busy weekend, with many events taking place across the capital. Please plan your travel to and from the event in advance, look out for one another and ask for help if you need it.

“As with any large public event, we urge anyone attending Pride to be alert and keep their eyes open. If you see something that doesn’t that look or feel right, please trust your instincts and bring it to the attention of an officer or a steward. In an emergency, always call 999.”
