A 20-year-old lorry attendant lost his life, while two others sustained injuries after their vehicle skidded and crashed into a signpost at Kilometer 77.6 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) heading south yesterday.
The victim, identified as Mohamad Zulfiqry Zunaidi Abdullah from Senggarang, Johor, was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries sustained in the crash.
According to NST, Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail reported that the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 PM. The lorry, driven by a 33-year-old man from Serian, Sarawak, was traveling from Pendang towards Sungai Petani when the vehicle lost control and veered off the road, striking a roadside signpost.
"Initial investigations revealed that the lorry veered to the left before crashing into the signpost. The impact of the collision resulted in the fatal injuries of the attendant seated in the front passenger seat," Wan Azharuddin stated.
Two others in the lorry survived the crash but sustained injuries. The driver suffered minor injuries, while a 24-year-old attendant from Keningau, Sabah, sustained head and leg injuries. Both were rushed to Pendang Hospital for treatment.
The deceased's body was sent to the Forensic Unit of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
