Kapurthala police intensified its crackdown against drug abuse and illegal gambling activities by registering multiple cases under the NDPS Act and the Gambling Act across Phagwara and adjoining areas.

In one of the major actions, City Phagwara police arrested Pawan Kumar alias Rinku, a resident of Khalwara Gate, after he was allegedly found consuming heroin near the old Civil Hospital on Banga Road. Police recovered aluminium foil, a rolled currency note and a lighter allegedly being used for drug consumption.

In another case registered by City Phagwara police, accused Vicky of Jagat Ram Sud Colony was arrested with 110 intoxicating tablets recovered during checking operations near Bhua Dhamri Road.

Satnampura police also arrested Karan Kumar alias Neeraj, a resident of village Mehtan, after recovering six grams of heroin from his possession during a naka operation near Law Gate area. Similarly, Subhanpur police arrested Parmjeet Singh alias Tota of Jagatjit Nagar, Hamira, for allegedly consuming heroin openly near a closed haveli on GT Road. Police recovered burnt aluminium foil, a lighter and a rolled currency note from the accused.

In another operation, Bhulath police arrested Subhash Kumar alias Bully, a resident of Ward No. 13, Bhulath, after allegedly recovering six grams of heroin from his possession following a tip-off.

Meanwhile, in a significant action against illegal gambling, City Phagwara police registered a case under the Gambling Act and arrested seven persons allegedly involved in gambling activities near the bus stand area on Mandi Godown Road.

The accused were identified as Chander Mohan, Aswani Kumar, Parminder Singh, Varinder Kumar, Sandeep Kalia, Mrank Handa and Sandeep Bhandari. Police recovered cash amounting to Rs 1,55,555 from the spot. Officials stated that the accused were allegedly gambling with playing cards and causing financial loss to the government by indulging in illegal betting activities. Kapurthala police said all the accused have been arrested and further investigations are underway in the respective cases.
