UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has extended an olive branch to sacked and suspended party members, including prominent figures Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, emphasizing that loyalty and commitment to the party's cause are crucial for their return.
Speaking after the Barisan Nasional Selangor convention at the Shah Alam Convention Centre, Zahid highlighted the example of former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who recently regained his position within the party after displaying steadfast dedication despite his suspension.
“Tajuddin demonstrated loyalty by actively participating in party activities and campaigns, even while suspended. If others, like him, show similar commitment, the Umno Supreme Council would not turn them away,” Zahid remarked, as reported by Free Malaysia Today.
The statement marks a significant moment for the party, signaling its openness to reconciliation amid past internal conflicts. Khairy, Hishammuddin, and other former members were either expelled or suspended following the party’s internal elections last year due to allegations of breaching party rules or challenging leadership decisions.
Among those removed were Tan Sri Noh Omar, a former Tanjong Karang MP, and Isham Jalil. Suspensions were handed out to Sembrong MP Hishammuddin and Shahril Sufian Hamdan, the party’s former information chief. The expulsions had stirred debates about the party’s direction under Zahid’s leadership, with critics calling for reforms and more inclusive decision-making.
While some of the ousted members distanced themselves from Umno’s activities, Khairy and Shahril took an unconventional route by launching a podcast, Keluar Sekejap. The platform quickly gained traction, allowing them to maintain a presence in Malaysia’s political discourse. Hishammuddin, however, has remained largely inactive in politics since his suspension.
The reinstatement of Tajuddin was highlighted as a testament to the party’s willingness to reward loyalty. Tajuddin had faced suspension in 2022 after openly criticizing Zahid's leadership but was recently welcomed back into the fold. Zahid pointed to Tajuddin’s consistent attendance at Umno events during his suspension as proof of his unwavering allegiance to the party.
For Khairy, Hishammuddin, and others seeking a return, the message is clear: actions demonstrating loyalty to Umno’s mission and values will pave the way for reconciliation. Zahid’s remarks suggest that the party is keen to mend internal rifts and focus on unity ahead of future challenges.
This development also comes as Umno navigates its evolving role within Malaysia’s political landscape. The party, once dominant, is now part of a coalition government and faces mounting pressure to adapt to changing voter sentiments. By opening the door to former members who prove their loyalty, Zahid may be aiming to strengthen the party’s ranks and present a united front.
The ball is now in the court of those sidelined by the party. Whether figures like Khairy and Hishammuddin will make their way back into Umno, and how they choose to demonstrate their commitment, remains to be seen. For now, Zahid’s offer underscores the importance of loyalty as a cornerstone of the party’s values moving forward.
