When it comes to K-pop, few introductions are as instantly recognisable as the declaration: “STAYC girls, it’s going down!” In just a few short years, that signature call has become synonymous with addictive hits and a group that refuses to blend into the background.

Since their debut in 2020, STAYC—made up of SUMIN, SIEUN, ISA, SEEUN, YOON, AND J—have been steadily redefining what it means to be a fourth-generation girl group. Launched as the first female act under High Up Entertainment, the label founded by powerhouse producers Black Eyed Pilseung who are the hitmakers behind chart-toppers such as TWICE’s Fancy, SISTAR’s Touch My Body, GOT7’s If You Do, and Apink’s I’m So Sick, the six-piece quickly proved they weren’t just another name in a crowded industry. Instead, they set themselves apart with stellar vocals, a fresh identity, and a catalogue of songs that have become must-haves on playlists worldwide.

What makes their rise even more impressive is the timing. Debuting in the middle of a global pandemic, STAYC faced challenges that could have easily derailed a rookie group. Yet, with perseverance and an unrelenting focus on artistry, they turned obstacles into momentum—earning major awards and dropping chart-smashing hits like ASAP, Stereotype, and Teddy Bear.

Now, nearly five years in, STAYC are stepping into a new era with their latest single, I WANT IT. A track that captures their trademark cheerfulness while reflecting the group’s ongoing evolution. It has already been heralded as a contender for ‘song of the summer’. At its heart, I WANT IT is an anthem of self-confidence and resilience—something the members embody both on and off stage.

In an exclusive conversation with Lifestyle Asia, the group open up about the creative journey behind I WANT IT, the making of its music video, and how they continue to thrive in one of the most fast-paced industries in the world.

Your new summer single just dropped—what’s the vibe you’re channelling with this comeback?

SUMIN: I wanted to capture that perfect summer vibe, so I’m glad we can show you a refreshing performance in the summer heat.

Can you walk us through a favourite moment from the MV shoot or the recording process?

SIEUN: I remember filming my rap part during the MV shoot. The weather kept switching between rain and sudden scorching sunshine repeatedly that day in Thailand so that made everyone nervous when I was filming the rap scene.

We ended up filming it at a different location the next day because it suddenly started pouring on the first day when I tried to film the rapping part. I remember how hard I focused to get it done in a short period of time.

How do you each personally define a perfect summer day?

ISA: Relaxing at home while enjoying a cool breeze when it’s hot outside.

What are some must-have in your summer bags—beauty, fashion, or snacks?

SEEUN: Vitamins! I try to take my vitamins because I feel like I’ll burn more energy because the weather is so hot.

What’s one personal goal or dream—outside of music—that you’re hoping to explore in the next year or two?

YOON: Hmm.. I think my biggest dream is still to achieve something as STAYC. Personally, I’m taking on acting and plan to keep working hard at it.

What are your go-to ways to recharge during a packed summer promo schedule?

J: Sleeping as much as possible when I can and making sure to eat well? It’s basic stuff but I think sleep and food are super important!
