LTdL 2022: Reguigui’s absence deals severe blow to TSG

IPOH – The absence of Youcef Reguigui, who was involved in a peloton crash in the fourth stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) yesterday, has dealt a severe blow to the Terengganu Polygon Cycling Team (TSG) from continuing the remaining four stages with excellence.

TSG sports director Danny Feng said the Algerian rider was confirmed to have suffered a serious knee injury and needed to undergo surgery at a hospital here following the accident that occurred in the last kilometre to the finish line of the Sabak Bernam to Meru Raya route.

“He was lucky not to break any bones in the crash, but his (left) knee took the brunt of the impact. He has a huge cut right above his knee, which has also damaged his tendon.

“He will undergo surgery to try and repair the tendon. After the surgery, we will bring him back to Kuala Terengganu, where he will recover for two weeks before going home to Algeria,” he said when met.

He said following the situation that befell the 32-year-old rider, it had a big impact on the TSG team who had to change their strategy, especially in helping his teammate, Mohd Harrif Saleh.

“He had been the captain of the race because he has the most experience, having raced at the World Tour level previously.

“Harrif is in good condition and has the ability to win (stages), but without Reguigui, we will require other strategies to lead him out,” Danny said.

Today’s fifth stage race involves a distance of 172km from Kuala Kangsar to Kulim. – Bernama, October 15, 2022
