MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has suspended the operations of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi after its driver was linked to a viral “robbery prank” involving two vloggers, as the agency launched an investigation into the incident.
LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II said the 30-day suspension was imposed pending the result of the agency’s investigation.
The suspension covers the unit operated by Green and Smart Mobility Philippines Inc., whose driver was accused of participating in a staged robbery prank with vloggers who acted as criminals.
“This is not something to be laughed at. Instead, it creates fear among our fellow Filipinos who regularly ride taxis and transport network vehicle services (TNVS). We will look into this, and we assure the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be carried out,” Mendoza said in a statement.
The LTFRB chief said a show cause order would be issued against Green and Smart Mobility Philippines Inc. to require the operator to explain why it should not be penalized over the incident.
In the viral video, the driver was seen announcing the supposed robbery before being joined by two vloggers who portrayed robbers.
Mendoza said the incident sent the wrong message to the riding public and could affect efforts to restore trust and confidence in public transportation.
The investigation comes as the LTFRB is also looking into reports involving two taxi drivers allegedly accused of robbing two foreign male models who were in the country on June 13 for a fashion show.
Mendoza said the incidents constituted a possible violation of the conditions for operating public utility vehicles, particularly the requirement to provide safe and convenient public land transportation services.
He urged public utility vehicle operators and drivers to work with the government in improving the country’s transport system and regaining the confidence of commuters.
“Public transportation should provide safety and security, not fear, to our riding public,” Mendoza said.
