SHAH ALAM, Sept 1 - The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) has urged the public to limit outdoor activities and conserve water and electricity amid the expected Super El Nino phenomenon in the coming months.
In a public service announcement shared on its social media today, the state agency said these are among the necessary measures the public should take in preparation for the Super El Nino, which could bring extreme weather conditions.
It said the phenomenon requires the public to remain vigilant and prepared, noting that unpredictable weather changes could affect not only the environment but also daily life and activities.
“Therefore, the public is advised to stay updated on the latest weather developments, enhance their level of preparedness and take appropriate measures in preparation for any eventualities,” it said.
LUAS said the Super El Nino is expected to intensify between August and October, potentially reaching an extremely strong level by the end of the year.
“Super El Nino has the potential to bring hotter and drier weather, lower rainfall volumes, as well as increase the risks of drought and forest fires.”
It said that, apart from limiting outdoor activities and conserving water and electricity, other measures to mitigate the impact of the phenomenon include staying adequately hydrated, strictly avoiding open burning and keeping household pets safely indoors.
The agency further advised residents to inspect and seal off any holes, vents or openings around their homes that could serve as entryways for snakes and other venomous animals.
LUAS also highlighted several environmental and public safety risks associated with Super El Niño, including reduced raw water supply due to low rainfall, an increased risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, rising temperatures, and a higher likelihood of peatland and forest fires that could lead to transboundary haze.
