A Ludhiana-based lawyer aspiring to become a judicial officer died after a speeding car allegedly hit her scooter near Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Thursday.

The deceased, identified as Shivani Wadhwa, was returning home on her Activa scooter when the accident occurred near Saggu Chowk.

Shivani was the only earning member of the family after her sister’s marriage as her father has been confined to bed in a coma following a brain haemorrhage for a long time.

A close relative, Sumit Baweja, who was coming behind Shivani’s Activa (PB 08 DR 2652), informed the police that a car bearing registration number PB 91 E 9666 had hit the scooter at high speed. The impact allegedly threw Shivani into the air, causing severe injuries.

Baweja rushed the injured Shivani, who was bleeding profusely and unconscious, to a multi-specialty hospital in Ludhiana, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Baweja alleged that the woman driver of the car had left the hospital fearing police action.

The aggrieved family has sought stern action against the driver, alleging that reckless driving had resulted in tragic end to Shivani’s dream of becoming a judicial officer. She had been preparing for competitive examinations besides looking after the family.

Ludhiana District Bar Association president Vipin Saggar said the association had announced a ‘No Work Day’ as a token of respect to the deceased and to show solidarity with her family.

“The association will fight for justice for Shivani,” said Saggar.
