Tensions ran high as a man climbed atop a tower in Dholanwal village to express what he alleged was police inaction against drug peddlers.
The man, identified as Gian Singh Mand from Gopalpur village, was brought down by police.
Amarnath Koom Kalan, a trade union leader from the area, said residents had urged the Koom Kalan Station House Officer (SHO) to take strict action against two women peddlers who were frequently visiting the area to sell drugs. However, the officer abused Mand, following which the latter climbed atop the tower in protest, he added.
The villagers demanded strict action against the drug peddlers.
In a video message, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Inderjit Singh Boparai said a video of farmer leader Gian Singh climbing atop the tower had surfaced on social media, following which the police reached the spot. He added the matter was resolved peacefully.
“The department is taking firm action against drug menace. In the last three months, 21 cases have been registered in the Mand Chaunta area under Koom Kalan police station. Proceedings against a property linked to drug trade have also been sent to the competent authority in Delhi. Police are committed to dealing strictly with anyone involved in the sale or peddling of drugs,” added ACP Boparai.
