Malaysia will enter the Thomas Cup quarter-finals as group runners-up after falling to Japan in a high-stakes encounter at Forum Horsens.
Despite a spirited effort to secure the top seed, the national squad couldn’t overcome a resilient Japanese side, finishing the group stage with two wins and one loss.
The tie started with a tough assignment for Leong Jun Hao in the first singles.
Facing world No. 9 Kodai Naraoka, Jun Hao struggled to break through the Japanese star’s defense, eventually conceding the match 11-21, 15-21.
Malaysia found a way back into the tie through the first doubles.
Aaron Chia, paired today with Tee Kai Wun, showed great resolve against Kakeru Kumagai and Hiroki Nishi.
After dropping the opening set, the Malaysian duo intensified their attack to claim a 16-21, 21-14, 21-19 victory, bringing the score to 1-1.
The momentum shifted again in the second singles. Justin Hoh faced Yushi Tanaka, but despite his best efforts to keep the rallies long, Tanaka’s precision led to a 21-15, 21-12 win for Japan, putting Malaysia behind 1-2.
The decisive point went to Japan in the second doubles. Soh Wooi Yik and Nur Izzuddin fought an exhausting three-set battle against Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami.
After taking the first set convincingly 21-14, the Malaysians narrowly lost the following two sets 19-21, 19-21, giving Japan an unassailable 3-1 lead.
In the final match of the night, Lee Zii Jia restored some pride for the Malaysian camp. Facing Koki Watanabe, Zii Jia remained composed to secure a 21-13, 21-19 victory, narrowing the final scoreline to 3-2.
Malaysia now looks ahead to the knockout stage draw, where they will face a group winner in the quarter-finals.
