M’sia Masters: Aaron-Wooi Yik survive close call to enter second round

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik narrowly entered the Malaysia Masters second round after defeating Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan 21-18, 10-21, 23-21.

It was a close call for the Malaysian pair as they fell in the second set to their 32nd-seeded Indonesian opponents, forcing a third set showdown.

Having to fight back, Aaron-Wooi Yik managed to claw their way back and sealed the win in 55 minutes at the Axiata Arena.

After the match, Wooi Yik said the pair’s history of losing the second set is something they need to work on moving forward.

“I think this always happens, we throw our points away and lose focus. We managed to find our rhythm in the third set, but we were still making mistakes,” he said.

The pair will take on South Korea’s Choi Sol-gyu-Kim Won-ho in the second round tomorrow.

World number two Aaron-Wooi Yik won their previous meeting with the South Koreans in 2020 at the Badminton Asia Team Championships.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles duo Man Wei Chong-Kai Wun Tee also made it into the second round after beating Denmark’s Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 25-23, 21-16.

They will either play compatriots Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong or Scottish duo Alexander Dunn-Adam Hall in tomorrow’s second round. – The Vibes, May 23, 2023
