An Airbnb owner who rents out her unit apartment as a short-term stay was left shocked after discovering her unit in a severe mess, allegedly caused by a male guest who fell seriously ill during his stay, according to China Press.
According to the owner, the guest was a young man in his late 20s who had booked the unit for six nights.
He checked in on 15 Dec and was supposed to check out at noon on 21 Dec.
Guest stopped responding before checkout
The owner said she became concerned when the guest did not respond to her checkout messages and failed to return the keys.
As a result, she arranged to enter the unit at around 5pm with building security staff and a cleaner present.
When they opened the door, they found the man lying on the sofa and the unit filled with a strong unpleasant smell.
There were no signs of alcohol or alcohol bottles in the apartment.
Because the situation looked serious, no one dared to enter the unit at first. They tried calling out to the man from outside, but he did not respond.
Ambulance called after man showed no signs of waking
After confirming that the man was still breathing, the owner contacted the authorities. About an hour later, she returned with emergency responders, but the man was still unconscious.
He was eventually taken to hospital by ambulance.
According to the hospital, the man said he had eaten bak kut teh earlier and began feeling unwell shortly after.
He reportedly experienced continuous vomiting and his condition was described as serious.
Apartment badly damaged, owner says
The owner later said the condition of the apartment was “almost destroyed”, with damage estimated at close to 80 percent.
Aside from the television and washing machine, most items in the unit were affected.
Furniture such as the bed, pillows, sofa, chairs, carpets, flooring, and even the bathroom required deep cleaning, repair, or replacement.
She estimated her losses at around RM4,500 due to cleaning, disinfection, and damaged items.
She added that the apartment has since been fully cleaned and disinfected.
The owner claimed that the man later alleged his money had gone missing and implied that she had taken it.
She said she was shocked by the move and stressed that she did not enter the apartment alone at any point before emergency responders arrived.
She also stated that she could not have taken any of the man’s belongings, as she only entered the unit under supervision.
“I hope guests treat rental homes with care”
The owner shared that she had put a lot of effort into furnishing and maintaining the apartment, from renovation to repairs.
She said she hopes future guests will treat rental homes responsibly and respect the effort owners put into maintaining them.
