A Malaysian man is seeking the internet’s help deciding whether he should break up with his girlfriend of more than 7 years over her expectations of him.

The man anonymously questioned his relationship on the XUAN Facebook page, where he shared how she had called him stingy despite having spent thousands on her over the years.

He wrote, “I am from Melaka, born in the 90s, and I have a girlfriend whom I have been dating for more than 7 years. In the past 7 years, I have been responsible for paying for almost all our dates, including petrol, parking fees and more. I also give gifts on important occasions such as anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, birthdays and New Year’s Eve.”

“My way of giving gifts is directly transferring money to her bank account so that she can choose what she likes. On her birthdays, I will transfer about RM1,200, and the amount gradually increases every year.”

On top of providing her with money to buy gifts on occasions, he had also ‘lent’ her money, but she has never paid him back. She had allegedly borrowed RM1,600 to dye her hair at a high-end salon and RM3,000 for a qualification course for a job promotion.

“She says she envies her friends”

Despite being provided with money for gifts and favours, she apparently called him stingy, citing that her friends often receive luxury handbags from their husbands.

“Recently, she has become more and more disgusted with me, often saying that I am ‘stingy’, as if I have never given her anything. She said that she is envious of her friends who are happily married and receive branded bags for their husbands every year. She also hoped that I could give her branded bags of RM5,000 to RM15,000, like the others,” he said.

He added that he can provide gifts of RM1,500 to RM2,500, but his girlfriend is unhappy with the limit on his budget.

He also mentioned their plans to travel, with him offering to pay for 50% of her expenses on future trips, but she found this to mean that he “does not love her enough”, as she would rather not fork out any money at all.

Following this, his girlfriend has allegedly started a “cold war” with him and has refused to communicate or respond to his messages. Due to this, he is feeling confused and is wondering if he should just end the relationship.

“We met in school and have been together since we were young. We experienced the pandemic lockdown together and have been together for 7 years,”

“I am unwilling to break things off, but I feel too tired to continue,” he added.

What people had to say

Netizens believe that he should let the girlfriend go, as her expectations of him are more suited towards a ‘sugar daddy’.
