A Malaysian express bus driver has been dismissed from his job after a viral video showed a woman sitting on his lap while he was driving along a highway, sparking widespread public outrage and official investigations.

The footage, believed to have been recorded by a passenger, shows the woman positioned on the driver’s lap inside the moving bus while handling the steering wheel at certain moments. The incident reportedly occurred during a long-distance trip from Kuala Lumpur towards Johor.

According to NST, the bus driver is a married man.

Immediate action from authorities

Once the clip circulated on social media, it quickly drew attention from authorities and transport regulators. The driver was identified shortly after the video went viral, and investigations were launched by relevant agencies, including road transport department.

The Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) senior enforcement director, Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said that the driver was called in to give a statement as part of ongoing inquiries into the incident.

Bus company terminates employment

Sri Maju Group confirmed that the driver was an employee of the company and that his services were terminated immediately following the incident.

The company stated that the behaviour was a serious breach of standard operating procedures and professional driving conduct, stressing that passenger safety is its top priority.

At the same time, the company also filed a police report and notified Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for further investigation, while pledging to strengthen internal safety monitoring measures, including increased video surveillance systems on buses.

Public safety concerns raised

The incident has caused renewed concerns over safety standards in public transport, particularly regarding driver discipline and passenger conduct inside moving vehicles.
