A Malaysian dance crew promoting the nation’s culture in Paris found themselves in an awkward encounter when a tourist flashed a rude hand gesture while photos were being taken near the iconic Eiffel Tower. However, instead of escalating the situation with anger, the dancers handled it with remarkable composure and grace.

Taking to Threads, user and choreographer Hanafi Rosdi (known online as hanafirosdi_hr) shared a video capturing the incident, which quickly sparked widespread praise from netizens online. The footage highlights how cultural pride does not require hostility, but rather a firm and educational approach when boundaries are crossed.

“Is my way of reprimanding wrong? I am carrying our name and tradition, but if it is being mocked, then we must defend it. Who else if not us. I wasn’t angry at him, but we have to let them know that this is not right,” he wrote.

How the tourist reacted: From awkward gesture to a high-five

Speaking exclusively to WORLD OF BUZZ, Hanafi Rosdi, who serves as the Director and Choreographer for On Stage Productions, Malaysia, detailed what happened right after he addressed the disrespectful gesture. Rather than letting the incident ruin their day or turning it into a public spectacle, the team chose to handle it constructively.

Their calm demeanor immediately shifted the tone of the interaction, turning a moment of disrespect into a surprising cross-cultural exchange. It demonstrates that effective communication often relies on patience rather than aggression.

“I believe what happened can be a lesson for everyone. I didn’t get angry or argue with him. Instead, I calmly explained that his gesture was inappropriate, especially when taking a photo with someone wearing traditional Malaysian attire,

“After I corrected him, he seemed a little embarrassed and realised that what he did was disrespectful. That’s why, at the end of the video, we actually gave each other a high five! There were no hard feelings. I simply wanted him to understand and learn from the situation. For me, it’s not about creating conflict, but about educating people through respect and understanding.” Hanafi shared with WORLD OF BUZZ.

The troupe was in Paris representing Malaysia for the second consecutive year under the banner of Tourism Malaysia Paris, showcasing traditional heritage to international crowds.

Carrying our national identity abroad with dignity

Reflecting on the importance of cultural representation on foreign soil, Hanafi emphasised that travelling abroad in traditional garments means carrying the soul and history of the nation. Every step taken in traditional wear tells a story of Malaysia’s rich heritage.

This mindset ensures that international showcases leave a lasting, positive impression on global audiences, fostering genuine appreciation rather than superficial curiosity.

“My message is simple: Wherever we go, never forget our values, manners and cultural identity. When we travel abroad, especially while wearing our traditional attire, we are not just representing ourselves. We are also carrying the name of our country, our heritage and our cultural identity.”

“Our traditional costumes are more than just beautiful outfits. They represent the history, identity and pride of our people. That’s why I believe it is important to protect and respect our culture, while also showing kindness and good manners towards others. We don’t need to be aggressive to stand up for our culture. Sometimes, a calm but firm reminder is enough to make someone understand.” Hanafi told WORLD OF BUZZ.
