A Malaysian netizen earning RM6,300 a month has sparked debate online after seeking financial advice on whether she should purchase a Mazda CX-5 priced between RM143,300 and RM187,200 ahead of her planned wedding next year.

In a post shared on social media, the 29-year-old revealed that her basic monthly salary had recently increased from RM5,800 to RM6,300.

Despite the pay rise, she admitted feeling uncertain about whether she could afford the car, which she had been eyeing for a year.

Not much commitment

According to her post, she has no other debts apart from a monthly RM1,300 payment for an Amanah Saham Bumiputera Financing (ASBF) commitment.

She also shared that she was planning to get married in February next year, raising concerns about whether taking on another financial commitment would be a wise decision.

The woman added that she was considering selling her 2019 Perodua Myvi, which she said had been fully paid off, to use the proceeds as a down payment for the Mazda CX-5.

She ended her post by asking for advice from other users, adding that she was open to criticism.

Majority of netizen advise against purchase

A poll accompanying the post received 5,032 votes, with 58% of respondents choosing the option suggesting that her plan was unrealistic, while the remaining 42% felt she could afford it.

One commenter advised her against rushing into the purchase, saying that she should wait until her monthly salary reaches five figures before considering a car worth around RM100,000.

The discussion highlights the financial considerations that come with purchasing a new vehicle, particularly when major life milestones such as marriage are approaching.
