While the badminton tournaments at the Paris 2024 Olympics were going on, most Malaysians were focused on supporting our local shuttlers as they battled it out to win medals for our country.
However, it appears that some were more focused on other aspects of our athletes’ performance.
Famous Malaysian human rights activist, Siti Kasim, took to her Facebook page to call out a now-deleted post which showcased a Malaysian calling for authorities to push badminton players to wear attire that covers their entire bodies. The person also insisted that the authorities strip them of their citizenship should they refuse.
The person also used an image of the Malaysian women’s doubles dynamic duo, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, as an example.
“I hope Malaysia makes it mandatory for our country’s badminton players to cover their bodies. If they refuse, strip them of their citizenship for insulting Islam,” they wrote.
In response to the post, Siti Kasim remarked that this was an “offensive and regressive” way of thinking.
Many Malaysians fought back, pointing out that badminton players who are non-Muslims should be free to wear normal sporting attire.
“I totally disagree with this person. The right of dressing is up to each individual athlete. On top of that, they are non-Muslim. That’s their individual right. It has nothing to do with insulting Islam.”
