A shocking courtroom moment unfolded in Penang after a Malaysian man was charged with attacking a police officer including biting him on the chest.
The accused appeared before the Magistrate’s Court after allegedly injuring a police officer at the guard post of the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) on the night of June 22.
Also, as he was escorted into court, he casually flashed a ‘peace’ sign at photographers.
Reported by Kosmo!, the man pleaded guilty in court, but the magistrate rejected his plea after he failed to identify photos from the incident that were presented as part of evidence.
Punched the officer’s cheek & bit his chest
According to case details, the altercation began when a police officer stationed at the guard post stopped two men acting suspiciously.
Upon closer inspection, both were found to be intoxicated and were brought into the guard post for further questioning.
That’s when things reportedly turned violent, as the man allegedly punched the officer in the cheek and bit his chest, leaving visible injuries such as swelling and bruising.
Granted bail
He was eventually charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt. If convicted, he faces up to one year in prison, a RM2,000 fine, or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lau Shavin initially proposed bail of RM5,000. However, his lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), S. Bommy, appealed for a lower amount, citing the youth’s age and modest monthly income of RM1,800.
The court ultimately set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and issued a warning that he must not disturb the victim or their family.
The next hearing is scheduled for July 21 for document submission and appointment of counsel.
