While it’s commonly assumed that a partner would bear the full cost of a date, occasionally one of them would offer to pay their half of the expenses.
A man’s severely misguided belief that unmarried couples should bear their own portion of the bill led to him losing his girlfriend and wondering what went wrong.
Split every expense 50/50
In an anonymous posting to Xuan’s Facebook page, the man wrote that his girlfriend often commented that he was “an extremely stingy person”, which was what led to the breakdown of their relationship.
He recounted:
“Every time we went out to shop, eat, watch movies, or take e-hailing rides together, I would pay first.
“After sending her home, I would list out all the expenses one by one and ask her to transfer half of the amount back to me.”
The man said the expenses included movie tickets, popcorn, round-trip transport fares, a pack of tissue, a cup of water, or a bowl of noodles they had at a roadside stall.
His reasoning? He believed that since they had yet to tie the knot, every expense should be calculated and split evenly.
‘Let’s break up!’
The man stated that at first, his girlfriend was okay with it but slowly became more and more unhappy as time passed.
Thing eventually culminated during a Christmas date when he bought a gift for his girlfriend, prompting her to ask him in jest: “Later are you going to ask me to pay back half of the amount as well?”
However, the man failed to take it as a “warning sign” and even went on to praise her for being understanding.
Reality finally hit the man when he returned home later, where he received a text message from his girlfriend, who asked for a breakup before blocking his contact number.
“When my mum found out about the breakup, she comforted me and said my ex-girlfriend wasn’t worth keeping and that I’ll find someone better in the future.
“But I still can’t let it go as I still hope to get back together with her and I have no idea what I did wrong,” he said.
