A recent incident has caught the attention of Malaysian netizens, detailing a dispute over RM10,000 allegedly missing from a purse belonging to a couple from China who are currently in Malaysia to accompany their daughter, who is studying in the country.
According to the couple’s statement, the wife had accidentally left her purse on a counter while shopping at a supermarket in Semenyih. She explained that she received a phone call at the time and left in a hurry, forgetting to take her purse with her.
Details of the alleged CCTV footage
After realising her purse was missing, she requested that the supermarket management check the CCTV footage, which she claimed captured a family of four taking the purse.
She further alleged that the footage showed a child picking up the purse and handing it to the mother, who then immediately placed it into her bag.
“We recorded their vehicle plate number from the CCTV as they left the supermarket, and later brought the full footage to the Semenyih police station to lodge a report.
“The police quickly identified the vehicle owner through the plate number. The person later came to the police station with the purse after being called in by the police,” the statement read.
The couple also explained why they were carrying such a large amount of cash, stating that due to the recent favourable exchange rate of the Malaysian Ringgit, the woman kept RM10,000 in cash in her purse for daily expenses.
“I had a good impression of Malaysia, especially the Malay community. I assumed that due to religious beliefs, there would be basic kindness and moral boundaries. This incident changed my long-held view. What is most upsetting is that it all happened in front of their two children, and the way this family behaved is really disappointing.”
Man denies there was any money in the purse when he found it
In an accompanying video, another woman could be heard helping to translate and communicate throughout the ordeal. When confronted, the man, believed to be the individual seen with his family in the CCTV footage, admitted to finding the purse but vehemently denied that there was any cash inside when he picked it up.
“I am very grateful to a Chinese woman stranger who helped translate and communicate throughout the process until late at night. I was able to feel kindness from a stranger in the middle of this unfortunate experience.
“The police handling the case were aware that the cash had likely been taken, but since the parties continued to deny it, local laws did not allow them to force the return of the money. The RM10,000 can only be seen as a painful lesson during my stay in a foreign country.”
