It’s no secret that Malaysian road users, especially motorcyclists, hold our road rules with very little regard.
From running red lights to parking wherever they please, many don’t realise the major inconveniences they are causing others.
Malaysian para-athlete, Daniel Lee (@pushtoinspire), took to his Instagram account to showcase how motorcyclists, in this case delivery riders, are parking their bikes in positions that block pathways for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
He wrote, “As a wheelchair user, it’s almost expected that every time I take the LRT near my place, a bike (or sometimes a car) would block the accessible pathways for PWDs. There were times where I had to wait 15 minutes in order to go through as it’s blocked completely by delivery bikes.”
“It also poses a safety hazard for people who are blind or have other disabilities. Note: the tactile paving for the blind in front of it. In this photo, it’s not fully blocked but it’s still in the way and definitely enough to block me from exiting.”
Considering such unethical behaviour has been called out for years and yet, motorists are still carrying out the irresponsible action of parking wherever they please, Daniel suggests that companies provide proper training to their riders for better road ethics.
“I’m not sure what can be done to change the mentality of Malaysian riders/drivers in general. But, maybe a good start is for companies in the transport/delivery industry to include training for their riders/drivers to be considerate of accessibility for PWDs or respect basic parking/driving etiquette,”
“This is not a complaint, rather a suggestion. I think companies and others in the industry are in a great position to make a difference. Small efforts make a huge difference. PWDs shouldn’t have to worry about being stuck helpless because of the inconsideration of an irresponsible person,” Daniel added.
