A man was fined RM1,500 for littering a burger wrapper in Kuala Lumpur and was also ordered to undergo four hours of community service (MKM) within a month of his conviction.

SWCorp Wilayah Persekutuan took to its Facebook page to share the news, noting that two other men received the same punishment for littering cigarette butts in public places.

Court conviction and legal framework

SWCorp Wilayah Persekutuan stated, “The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today (2 March) convicted three individuals for the offence of throwing solid waste in public spaces under Section 77A(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672).”

“Of the three persons being summoned (OKS), one is a Malaysian citizen, and two are foreign nationals, for the offence of throwing burger wrappers and cigarette butts in public spaces,” the statement added.

All three offenders were fined RM1,500 along with four hours of MKM. They were also ordered to be imprisoned for a month should they fail to pay their fines.

SWCorp Wilayah Persekutuan went on to explain that the enforcement operation, which led to the discovery of the three offenders littering in public spaces, was carried out around Bukit Bintang and KLCC.

“This action emphasises that enforcement is carried out fairly and without compromise against any party, regardless of nationality,” it added.
