Despite the possibility that Malaysia may send one of its smallest teams of athletes ever to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Malaysia does not fall short when it comes to having talented athletes.
And now, one of these athletes have now beaten a world champion in their sport!
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh took to her Twitter page to congratulate Malaysian World No.16 squash player, Sivasangari Subramaniam, for winning against 7-time Egyptian World Champion, Nour El Sherbini, on March 30 (Saturday).
She wrote, “Congratulations, Sangari! #RoadtoGold.”
According to a report by PSA World Tour, Sivasangari was said to have been shockingly spectacular in her relentlessness on the court.
“I’m still speechless. That went really quick and I don’t know what was happening on court, beating the World No.1! I respect Sherbini a lot, she’s the best on tour and is really talented. To beat a player like that, I came in with my A-game today.”
“I was just trying to focus on my game, rather than how she is feeling, but I took full advantage with my attacking game today,” Sivasangari shared.
She has also become the first Malaysian to reach a gold level final, something last achieved by Datuk Nicol David in 2015, after winning against Belgium World No.4 Nele Gilis just a day after beating the world champion.
