A Malaysian man working at a mixed rice stall in Singapore has been jailed for 18 days after he was convicted of two charges of theft and abetment.

29-year-old Lim Jun Yap pleaded guilty to one charge, while the other is being taken into consideration, reported Shin Min Daily News.

What happened

According to court documents, Lim worked as a cook and cashier at the stall located at a coffee shop at Block 155 Bukit Batok Street 11 from August 2023 to February 2025.

In January 2025, he and another Malaysian, Chia Yow Hwa, concocted a plan that would net them extra money through thievery.

Between Jan 1 and Feb 21, Chia patronised the mixed rice stall a total of eight times and would give a S$50 (approx. RM158) bill as payment.

After taking the S$50 bill, Lim would put it inside the cash register and take out five S$10 bills and one S$50 bill as change, which totalled to S$100 (approx. RM317).

To make it less conspicuous, Lim would place the S$50 bill below the S$10 bills.

This was done for a total of eight times, which allowed Lim to steal S$400 (approx. RM1,200). He would also divide the S$100 with Chia.

Caught

Lim’s deceit was finally discovered by the stall owner on Feb 22 and police were called. He was nabbed on the same day but was released on police bail the next day.

He has since made full restitution and was eventually ordered to sit 18 days in jail.

As for Chia, he was also charged and found guilty in court.
