
A Malaysian woman has sparked discussion online after sharing that she rejected a RM7,000 job offer because it required her to work fully onsite.
In a Threads post, she said her current salary is RM5,000 and she works from home. As for the new job offer, it came with a higher salary of RM7,000 but required her to be in the office every day.
Rejected offer due to commute
According to her, the role also did not come with flexible hours that would help her avoid peak hour traffic.
She added that the daily travel time would take at least two hours. Because of this, she decided to turn down the offer.
However, she claimed that a recruiter later called her “ungrateful” and told her that she would not get a better offer than this.
In a follow-up post, she clarified that the recruiter was from a recruiting agency, not the HR department of the company.
She said the company’s HR only told her that the offer was already generous and that it was a “take it or leave it” situation.
While the company accepted her decision to reject the offer, she admitted the “ungrateful” remark weighed heavily on her.
Netizens say flexibility matters
Many netizens supported her decision, saying the extra RM2,000 may not be worth it after factoring in petrol, toll, parking and time spent commuting.
One commenter said choosing flexibility is better than doing a routine one hates.

Another said that once someone has experienced working from home, it can be difficult to return to a fully onsite role, especially if the work can be done remotely.

While others pointed out that a RM2,000 raise is still a good amount, many agreed that salary is no longer the only thing workers consider.
