A Malaysian woman recently shared a surprising — or perhaps not so surprising — revelation that shopping at higher-end grocery stores can be cheaper.
According to a viral post on Threads, the woman claimed that shoppers can save more by buying groceries at “T20 malls” compared with “most” shops commonly regarded as more “budget-friendly” options.
“If you don’t believe me, go and see it for yourself,” she said in her post.
Netizens agreed with her statement, with many expressing surprise at the affordability of these stores, especially for staple pantry items. They also noted the difference in quality of fresh produce and meats.
Some users drew comparisons between prices at wet markets and those at high-end grocery stores, with many still favouring the latter. They lamented the high cost of items such as vegetables and meat at wet markets, which have long been touted as the more affordable alternative.
“The pricey items are usually the imported ones, but local produce is much cheaper compared with the market,” a user noted.
“That’s right. Even sardines are cheaper in those stores,” another remarked.
“The vegetables there are cheaper and of higher quality. The chicken meat is also quite clean and does not smell,” another commented.
