Malaysians should not boycott National Day celebrations simply because they are unhappy with issues surrounding the Rohingya community, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Speaking at the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Dataran Wisma Pertahanan, Khaled said the country’s independence celebrations should not be dictated by emotions or dissatisfaction over specific issues.
‘Malaysia is our home’
Khaled compared Malaysia to a home that Malaysians have a responsibility to continue caring for, even when they disagree with certain developments taking place in the country, reported Harian Metro.
“Malaysia is the land where our blood is spilled. Malaysia is our home.
“As the owner of the house, we would not stop taking care of and decorating our home simply because we disagree with the presence of people whom we did not invite,” he said.
He added that Malaysians should not give up the opportunity to express their love for the country simply because they are unhappy with certain issues.
Instead, he urged the public to use the National Day celebrations as an opportunity to strengthen their sense of patriotism.
According to Khaled, a strong display of patriotism would also send a message to parties both inside and outside the country that Malaysians would not allow the nation to become a platform for political disputes and controversies.
Calls to boycott National Day celebrations
His remarks came after several social media users reportedly called on Malaysians to boycott the National Day celebrations over the Rohingya issue.
Some had also urged members of the public to attend celebrations at Dataran Putrajaya while carrying placards containing sarcastic messages or demands related to the issue.
One social media user reportedly argued that Malaysians should not remain silent and should instead use the National Day celebration as an opportunity to make their voices heard, especially as national leaders would be present at the main event.
‘Protect the country’s sovereignty’
In his speech, Khaled also called on Malaysians to use this year’s National Day celebrations to renew their commitment to protecting the country’s sovereignty.
“This country did not become independent and stand on its own by itself.
“We are the ones who must build it together, protect it, love it and safeguard its sovereignty,” he said.
He urged Malaysians to make this year a time to resolve not to do anything that could undermine the nation’s sovereignty.
Most importantly, Khaled reminded Malaysians to continue praying for the country’s wellbeing, as well as for the soldiers serving and sacrificing at the nation’s borders and for Malaysians as a whole.
