Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia does not need a new agreement or “new deal” as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remains relevant and binding, said Papar MP Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali (pic).
In his Malaysia Day message, Armizan said the significance of this year’s “63/63”, marking Malaysia’s 63rd anniversary since its formation in 1963, should come with greater understanding of the country’s history and the agreement underpinning the Federation.
He said understanding Malaysia’s independence and formation required full recognition of MA63, alongside the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1948 and Malaya’s independence in 1957.
Armizan highlighted Article VIII of MA63, which provides for legislative, executive or other action to implement assurances, undertakings and recommendations contained in the Inter-Governmental Committee Report.
He said the provision affirmed the commitments and responsibilities undertaken by the parties that agreed to form the Federation of Malaysia.
“Moving forward, this country does not need a new agreement or what some describe as a ‘new deal’,” he said.
Armizan said MA63 did not cease to have relevance upon the establishment of the Federal Constitution, maintaining that its commitments and responsibilities remained relevant and binding.
