KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) will host two editions of the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen the country's basketball development pathway and provide young players with greater exposure to top-level international competition.
The under-21 and under-23 tournaments is held at the Hextar World, Empire City, in July and August, bringing together some of the region's most promising 3x3 basketball talents.
MABA president Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock said the competitions are more than just international tournaments, describing them as a crucial component of the association's structured plan to develop Malaysia's next generation of 3x3 players.
He said competing regularly against quality international opposition would help accelerate players' development while preparing them for the demands of elite competition.
"These competitions are not merely tournaments on the calendar. They form an important part of our long-term development pathway, allowing our young players to test themselves against strong international opponents and accelerate their growth through meaningful competition.
"Every opportunity to compete at this level helps our players build confidence, improve their decision-making under pressure and better understand the demands of international basketball. Those experiences are crucial if we want Malaysia to continue progressing in the 3x3 format.
"To every player selected to represent Malaysia, remember that you are carrying far more than the national jersey. You have the privilege and responsibility of representing our country with pride, commitment, discipline and respect. Give your best in every match and show the values that Malaysian basketball stands for," he told Scoop.
Lee also announced that the prestigious Agong Cup will return in October at Hextar World, Empire City, featuring both the 3x3 and traditional 5-on-5 formats.
He said staging both disciplines reflects MABA's commitment to developing every aspect of the sport while creating more competitive opportunities for local players.
"The Agong Cup remains one of our flagship domestic competitions, and staging both formats reflects our commitment to developing every aspect of the game. We want to create more opportunities for players to compete consistently while raising the overall standard of basketball in Malaysia," he said.
The under-21 tournament will feature teams from Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, the Philippines and Belarus, while the under-23 competition will include Vietnam, Thailand, New Zealand, the Philippines and Taiwan.
Lee also thanked MABA's coaches, officials, athletes and strategic partners for their continued support in growing the sport.
"None of this would be possible without the dedication of our coaches, officials, athletes and partners, who continue to believe in our vision. Their commitment has been instrumental in helping us move Malaysian basketball forward.
