The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has clarified that its role will not conflict with the newly established Ombudsman Malaysia, despite both bodies focusing on integrity and governance issues.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki explained that the agency’s primary mandate remains investigations and enforcement, supplemented by public education and advocacy to strengthen integrity in government operations. He emphasized that preventive measures and advisory work with public agencies form part of MACC’s broader mission to promote good governance and combat corruption.

Besides the MACC, other agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will also work within the Ombudsman framework. Specifics will be shared later. I assure the public that there will be no overlap in responsibilities,” Azam told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the MACC–UiTM Inspira 2025: Integrity and Leadership Day programme at Universiti Teknologi MARA’s Puncak Alam campus.

During the event, themed “Integrity is the Core of Leadership, Trust is the Foundation of Success,” Azam highlighted the importance of cooperation among government agencies to ensure integrity reforms are effective and sustainable. UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin also attended the programme.

Azam further confirmed that the MACC will actively participate in the drafting of the Malaysian Ombudsman Bill, slated to be tabled in Parliament by mid-2026. The new Ombudsman is expected to oversee public complaints regarding maladministration, misconduct, and whistleblower protection, as well as ensuring adherence to freedom of information laws.

The announcement follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent briefing that the Ombudsman will serve as an independent body with broad powers to safeguard public sector integrity and uphold citizens’ rights. Anwar emphasized that the establishment of the Ombudsman reflects the government’s commitment to reinforcing transparency, accountability, and good governance in public service.

Azam also reassured that the MACC remains fully committed to its core functions and will continue providing guidance to government departments on corruption prevention. By clearly delineating responsibilities, both the MACC and Ombudsman Malaysia aim to complement each other’s work, ensuring a comprehensive approach to promoting integrity and public trust in government institutions.
