The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched an investigation into UiTM Holdings over 2023 losses and an unauthorized RM42 million solar project payment.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has started an investigation into losses incurred by UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd in 2023.

It said the investigation covered various issues, including the development of a 50-megawatt solar project in Gambang, Pahang, which involved a payment of RM42 million for purposes unrelated to the project and without the approval of the Board of Directors (BOD).

“MACC emphasises that the investigation is still ongoing due to the complexity of the case, which involves techical aspects, and pending further instructions from the prosecution.

“In addition, to further complete the investigation process, MACC will also examine whether there are other relevant issues, including weaknesses in governance as mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday,” he said in a statement.

MACC also welcomed the Prime Minister’s concerns and firmness in efforts to address the weaknesses that contributed to the losses suffered by UiTM Holdings.

Meanwhile, MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, when contacted, said the investigation is being carried out under Section 23 of the MACC. Act 2009, adding that it would strive to complete the investigation as soon as possible in an independent and fair manner.

Yesterday, Anwar said Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) needed to conduct a comprehensive reassessment of the governance structure and management of UiTM Holdings following the losses incurred by its subsidiary.

The Prime Minister said that if the issue involved ordinary weaknesses, improvements or the replacement of officers should be carried out as in other agencies, but firm action must be taken if wrongdoing was proven to have occurred to ensure good governance in upheld in Bumiputera agencies.
