The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained another individual, the chief assistant director of a statutory body, in connection with a corruption case involving RM1.6 billion related to two highway projects in the Klang Valley.

According to MACC sources, the suspect, who is in his 40s, was apprehended at the MACC headquarters at 10 PM on June 27, following the recording of his statement. The sources indicated that the suspect allegedly received a bribe exceeding RM146,000 from a company in exchange for securing a work contract for the construction of a highway.

This arrest marks the 10th individual detained in relation to this case. The suspect has been remanded for four days until July 1, following a remand order issued by Magistrate Nazira Adlin Ahmad Khairul Razi at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court earlier today (June 28).

The recent arrest follows the apprehension of nine other individuals, including a chief executive officer (CEO) and two senior management officials of a highway concession company, who were detained by the MACC in connection with the same case.

In addition, sources revealed that Magistrate Nazira Adlin granted the MACC’s application to extend the remand of four suspects, including the CEO of the highway concessionaire, who were initially arrested on Monday. Their remand has been extended until July 2, starting tomorrow (June 29).

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrest of the new suspect as well as the extension of the remand orders for the four previously detained individuals. He stated that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which deals with offenses related to bribery and corruption.

This high-profile investigation underscores the MACC's commitment to combating corruption and upholding integrity within public and private sectors. The MACC continues to scrutinize the details surrounding the alleged bribes and the awarding of the highway project contracts, aiming to ensure accountability and transparency in the execution of infrastructure projects.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the substantial amount of money involved and the high-ranking positions of the individuals implicated. The ongoing investigation is expected to uncover more details about the corruption network and the mechanisms through which these bribes were facilitated.

As the MACC proceeds with its inquiries, the public awaits further developments and hopes for a resolution that reinforces the principles of justice and integrity. The arrests and remand extensions highlight the MACC's proactive measures in addressing corruption and emphasize the importance of vigilance in safeguarding public interests.

The MACC's efforts in this case serve as a reminder of the critical role that anti-corruption agencies play in maintaining a fair and transparent system, particularly in large-scale projects that have significant impacts on public infrastructure and resources.
