Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, a prominent businessman and the son of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has been served notice by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to disclose all his assets, regardless of their location within or outside the country.

According to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, Mokhzani was summoned on Friday at 11 am and has been granted a 30-day window to provide a comprehensive list of his assets. Azam Baki conveyed to The Star, an English daily, that Mokhzani must declare both domestic and international holdings within this one-month period.

Azam Baki also revealed that an investigation paper has been initiated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Proceeds from Illegal Activities Act 2001.

Addressing concerns of potential confusion, Azam Baki clarified that Mokhzani's case is distinct and unrelated to that of his brother, Mirzan Mahathir. Earlier, on January 17, MACC had similarly directed Mirzan to declare his assets within a 30-day timeframe.

The investigation by MACC was prompted by revelations in the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers, which exposed individuals with offshore bank accounts.

On January 19, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticized MACC for allegedly neglecting to investigate government supporters implicated in the Pandora Papers. He claimed that the list included Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz, PKR’s Selayang MP William Leong, and the parents of fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low.

The Panama Papers, comprising 11.5 million leaked documents published in 2016, divulged financial and attorney-client information for over 214,488 offshore entities. In contrast, the Pandora Papers, a 2021 leak of nearly 12 million documents, exposed hundreds of global elites for alleged tax avoidance and corruption.

As the MACC intensifies its efforts to promote financial transparency and combat corruption, Mokhzani Mahathir's case adds to the ongoing scrutiny of high-profile figures amidst revelations from the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers. The 30-day deadline for asset declaration signals a proactive stance by Malaysian authorities to ensure accountability and address potential irregularities in financial dealings.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) pursuit of financial transparency has taken a broader stride with businessman Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir now under the spotlight. As the 30-day deadline looms for him to declare his assets, the investigation unfolds against the backdrop of the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers exposés, heightening concerns about offshore financial dealings and possible corruption.

Mokhzani Mahathir, the son of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is not the only high-profile figure to receive such notice. His brother, Mirzan Mahathir, faced a similar directive earlier this month. The MACC's proactive approach to hold individuals accountable for their financial holdings aligns with a broader effort to address issues raised by the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers revelations.

The Pandora Papers, leaked in 2021, implicated numerous global elites in alleged tax avoidance and corruption through offshore accounts. Meanwhile, the Panama Papers, published in 2016, exposed a vast network of offshore entities involved in financial and attorney-client dealings. These leaks have spurred governments worldwide to scrutinize the financial affairs of public figures and business magnates.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki emphasized that Mokhzani's case is distinct from his brother's, dispelling any potential confusion surrounding the investigations. The MACC's decision to open an investigation paper under relevant anti-corruption and anti-money laundering acts underscores the seriousness with which authorities are approaching these matters.

In response to the unfolding investigations, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticized MACC for what he perceives as selective action. On January 19, he accused the commission of failing to probe government supporters listed in the Pandora Papers, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz, PKR’s Selayang MP William Leong, and the parents of fugitive businessman Jho Low.

The MACC's mandate extends beyond individual cases, aiming to restore public trust by ensuring accountability at all levels of government. The call for asset declarations aligns with global efforts to combat corruption and enhance financial transparency. The commission's commitment to investigating cases arising from the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers demonstrates its dedication to upholding the rule of law and addressing potential financial misconduct.

As the 30-day deadline for asset declaration approaches, Mokhzani Mahathir's case stands as a pivotal moment in Malaysia's ongoing efforts to foster transparency and combat corruption. The outcome of this investigation will not only shape the public's perception of accountability but will also contribute to the larger narrative of global anti-corruption initiatives in the wake of high-profile leaks and exposes. The MACC's actions are indicative of a commitment to creating a culture of integrity and responsibility, signaling that no individual, regardless of stature, is above the scrutiny of the law.
