Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin's wife, Naimah Khalid, has claimed trial to a charge of failing to comply with a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) notice requiring the declaration of assets.
This incident has attracted attention and raised questions about possible corruption or wrongdoing. Naimah has been charged under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act, which alleges that she failed to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice issued by the anti-graft agency. The specific accusation is that she did not declare her ownership of companies, several plots of land in both the current location and Penang, as well as two vehicles.
The offense allegedly occurred on December 13, 2023. If Naimah is found guilty, she could potentially face a jail term of up to five years and a fine not exceeding RM100,000. During the court proceedings, Judge Azura Alwi granted Naimah bail in the amount of RM250,000, requiring one surety. Additionally, Naimah was instructed to surrender her passport to the court. The court has fixed March 22 for the next mention of the case.
The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutors Ahmad Feisal Azmi and Fadhly Zamry while Naimah was represented by lawyers Yusof Zainal Abiden, M Puravalen, Yunos Shariff, and Alex Tan. This case is linked to an ongoing investigation involving Daim and his family. Earlier this month, the MACC summoned Naimah and her sons, Amir and Amin Zainuddin, to provide information about their assets. It was reported that the MACC had issued a notice to Daim under Section 36(1)(a) of the MACC Act in June the previous year.
Daim and his family have also filed an application for leave to commence judicial review proceedings regarding the MACC's investigation into their affairs. The decision on this application will be made by Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh on March 4. This case highlights the importance of transparency and compliance with anti-corruption regulations. The MACC plays a crucial role in combating corruption and ensuring accountability.
The outcome of this trial will determine whether Naimah is found guilty or not and what consequences she may face if convicted. Overall, this is a significant legal proceeding that underscores the need to address corruption allegations and reinforces the principle that no one is above the law, regardless of their social or political standing.
