The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has firmly denied allegations that it was used to target candidates who contested in the PKR party elections last May, following claims made by former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in a recent audio broadcast. The agency described the accusations as baseless and maintained that all investigative actions were carried out strictly according to legal provisions and established protocols.
In its statement on Sunday, MACC clarified that investigations are only initiated when complaints or credible information are received, and each report is subjected to a verification process before any further action is taken. The commission stressed that its officers operate within defined procedures to ensure fairness and integrity throughout every inquiry.
Addressing Rafizi’s claim that officers had “surrounded” the home of a PKR election candidate, MACC said the scenario was inaccurately portrayed. According to the commission, officers had visited the residence solely to conduct a search and collect evidence relevant to the case. The use of unannounced visits, the statement added, is a standard feature of investigative work, used to prevent the destruction or concealment of potential evidence.
MACC explained that during the visit, officers found the individual was not at home and subsequently left the premises once this was confirmed. The following day, the individual voluntarily appeared at the MACC office, where his statement was recorded before he was allowed to leave without being detained.
The commission reiterated that its actions were consistent with the needs of the investigation and complied fully with procedural requirements. It also urged any party dissatisfied with its conduct to channel complaints through proper avenues, including the police or the MACC Complaints Committee, both of which serve as formal mechanisms for reviewing concerns regarding misconduct.
Warning against irresponsible public accusations, MACC emphasised that unfounded claims circulated on social media can erode trust in national enforcement institutions. The agency called for restraint and accountability when raising allegations, especially those capable of influencing public perception or undermining institutional credibility.
Through its statement, MACC sought to reaffirm its commitment to transparency and adherence to the rule of law, noting that political narratives should not overshadow or distort factual investigative processes.
