Some people build fortunes, others build legacies. Madin built men.

Once a fierce rugby player and a fearless entrepreneur, Madin was never one to follow the beaten path. He started his small advertising business with nothing but grit, running it out of his late mother’s kitchen.

No capital, no government contracts—just sheer determination and discipline. His principles were simple: precision in work, respect for time, and an unyielding commitment to learning.

Today, age and illness have bound him to a wheelchair, but they have not touched the fire that defined him. Madin remains as sharp, as curious, and as dignified as ever.

A MENTOR WHO MOULDED. MEN

For the young men who worked under him, Madin was more than an employer—he was a teacher of life. He trained them with relentless patience, even when they fumbled with tasks as simple as cutting plastic for license plates. Failure was never an excuse; it was just a step toward mastery.

He never believed in taking shortcuts. "Do your work with precision, but always deliver on time," he would say. That lesson, drilled into those under his wing, would follow them long after they left his workshop.

But Madin’s influence extended beyond work. He introduced young minds to music, to art, and to the beauty of thought itself. In the dimly lit, zinc-roofed workspace, his cassette player filled the air with the melodies of Dan Byrd’s Boulevard and Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly. He translated lyrics, explained their meanings, and in doing so, expanded horizons.

LIFE, LIKE RUGBY, DEMANDS CHARACTER

A rugby player to the core, Madin lived by the sport’s unwritten code: play hard, play fair, and always carry yourself with honour.

Life, he believed, was no different. He taught that resilience mattered more than talent, and that knowledge was a weapon sharper than any blade.

"Without new knowledge," he once said, "even the smartest person will reach a limit." It was this hunger for learning that made him the mentor he was.

The lessons he imparted—of discipline, perseverance, and the courage to stand alone—stayed with those who passed through his doors. Some went on to become corporate leaders, others found success in their own ventures. But all carried a part of Madin with them.

A BODY WEAKENED, A SPIRIT UNBROKEN

More than 40 years later, in February 2025, those who knew Madin would see a man physically diminished but mentally unchanged.

Wheelchair-bound, his once-strong hands unable to hold a brush, he still spoke with the same clarity, still asked questions with the same curiosity.

Life had tackled him hard, but he had not let it crush him.

In a world where success is too often measured in money and titles, Madin’s true wealth lies in the lives he shaped. He never sought recognition, never pursued riches. He simply lived with purpose, dignity, and resilience.

He may now be OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya, disabled), but in the ways that matter most, Madin remains whole. His legacy is not in the signboards he once painted, but in the minds he sharpened, the principles he instilled, and the unwavering spirit he continues to embody.

Madin is, and always will be, a teacher who inspires his mentees. Happy Hari Raya Madin.
