Kota Kinabalu: Mafa FC emerged champions of the BRFC Cup Sabah 2026 where 10 amateur teams played 23 matches here.
SEFT A finished as runners-up, while Lawa FT and PSV FT shared third place.
The tournament which had a RM5,500 prize pool, saw teams competing across two groups and the knockout rounds.
“A lot of grassroots players give their time and energy to football around work, study and family. They deserve organised competitions too. We wanted this Cup to give teams something real to prepare for and a proper day to compete,” said event organiser Khusairy Chen in a statement on Sunday.
Safa Supreme Council member Othman Abdullah, who is also on Safa’s Technical and Development Committee, said that keeping amateur leagues active is important to football in Kota Kinabalu.
“Keeping amateur local leagues going, especially in Kota Kinabalu, is one of the best steps forward.
“Events like this will ensure football in Sabah continues to develop by showcasing new talent, sustaining regular competitions and maintaining commitment to the game under Persatuan Bolasepak Daerah Kota Kinabalu (PBD KK).
“Tournaments should be held consistently, with more young talent, licensed referees and better-organised team management,” said Othman.
Meanwhile, Braven Rovers plans to organise U12 and U15 tournaments in 2027. Details are still being developed.
