MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook the province of Davao Occidental early Sunday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tremor took place around 1:22 a.m. some 93 kilometers (kms) south-east of Balut Island, Sarangani, also in the same province, the agency said.

With a depth of 56kms, the state seismology bureau said the quake was tectonic in origin.

It said that Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded over Malungon, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabati; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat while Intensity 1 over Maasim and Malapatan, Sarangani; City of Korodanal and T'Boli, South Cotabato; Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; and City of Digos, Davao del Sur.

While damage to infrastructure was unlikely, Phivolcs said aftershocks were possible from the latest Davao Occidental event.
