
FILIPINO cue artist Jonas Magpantay dominated Taiwanese Chang Sheng Yi in the final, 13-5, to complete a sweep of the Universal Nine-Ball Open at the Pluit Village Mall in Jakarta, Indonesia Sunday night.
Magpantay went 8-0 in the tournament for his first World Nineball Tour (WNT) title and second major championship overall.
His first major title was the Qatar 10-Ball World Cup in November last year.
The 32-year-old bagged the top prize of $15,000 or nearly P920,000.
Magpantay defeated Indonesian Rio Pandu, 9-4, and Singaporean Sarathnavind Devanthan, 9-0, in the qualification to enter the knockout phase.
He defeated Japanese Kouki Sugiyama, 10-6, in the last 64, another local bet Irsal Nasution, 10-6, in the round of 32 before taking down fellow Pinoy players in the next three rounds.
Magpantay topped James Aranas, 10-6, in the round of 16; Bernie Regalario, 11-6, in the quarterfinals, and Jefrey Roda in the semifinals, 11-3.
The Quezon City resident fell at 0-2 against Chang in the final but won six straight racks to turn the tide in his favor.
Chang snared $8,000 (P490,000) for his runner-up finish while semifinalists Roda and Russian Ruslan Chinakhov pocketed $4,000 (P245,000) each.
A strong Filipino contingent participated in the tournament including 2-time reigning world champ Carlo Biado and Johann Chua.
Biado did not make the last 32, while Chua made the knockout phase but fell to Indonesian Ponco Manurung, 8-10, in the round of 32. NIEL VICTOR MASOY
