Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expressing dissatisfaction with the government, specifically regarding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and its investigation into his son, Mirzan Mahathir.

The MACC has recently served Mirzan Mahathir a notice to declare his assets as part of an ongoing investigation related to information from the Panama Papers report and his involvement in the sale and purchase of government-linked companies.

The investigation was initiated by MACC in August 2022. Dr Mahathir took to social media to voice his concerns, claiming that the MACC is unfairly targeting his son while other government supporters, including high-ranking officials and individuals named in the Pandora Papers, have not been subjected to the same level of scrutiny. Some of the individuals mentioned by Dr Mahathir include deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, PKR's Selayang MP William Leong, and the parents of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low.

Dr Mahathir believes that this apparent selective enforcement is contrary to the principles of "reformasi," a slogan that was initially used by supporters of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and later embraced by supporters of the Pakatan Harapan coalition to advocate for meaningful reforms. He suggests that when these individuals are in power, they act even worse toward their political opponents and that even court proceedings can be influenced and halted.

As for the MACC's actions, they have stated that Mirzan Mahathir was summoned to their headquarters and served a notice of asset declaration under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009. This section requires him to disclose all movable and immovable assets within his possession within 30 days. The MACC is currently examining financial documents and assets owned by Malaysians mentioned in the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers reports.

These reports, containing leaked documents given to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), unveiled information about offshore assets and bank accounts associated with political figures and other notable personalities. Dr Mahathir's criticism of the government and the MACC investigation raises concerns of potentially biased enforcement and unequal treatment of individuals involved in corruption allegations.

It underscores the importance of consistent and impartial application of the law, irrespective of political affiliations or positions held. The development of a fair and transparent system is essential to regain public trust and uphold the principles of justice and accountability in combating corruption.
