Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's sons, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, have revealed that they have been instructed to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding an ongoing anti-corruption investigation allegedly targeting their father, the former prime minister. The MACC's inquiries have reportedly identified their 98-year-old father as the primary subject of the investigation. Mokhzani confirmed this status of his father as the main suspect during an interview with Bloomberg, stating that both he and Mirzan are providing witness testimony in connection with the investigation.
Despite their cooperation, the MACC has not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of the investigation to Mokhzani and Mirzan. They expressed their frustration at being asked to provide information that could potentially implicate their parent in legal proceedings. Additionally, they revealed that they were asked to compile extensive records dating back to 1981, the year their father first assumed office as prime minister. The MACC, however, has not confirmed whether Dr Mahathir is indeed the target of the investigation.
The brothers are diligently working to fulfill the MACC's requests, despite the significant challenges posed by the extensive documentation required. They emphasized the difficulty of recalling information from the past, especially considering the lack of digital records during the early years of their father's tenure. Furthermore, Mirzan has been served a notice under the MACC Act to declare all his assets within a specified timeframe.
Dr Mahathir expressed disappointment with the government's actions, particularly the investigation into his sons' finances, which he deemed selective and unfair. He criticized what he perceived as flaws in the justice system and questioned the motives behind the investigation. Notably, the MACC's probe extends beyond Dr Mahathir's family to include other high-profile individuals and controversial corporate bailouts from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The investigation underscores the ongoing efforts to address corruption and financial impropriety within Malaysia's political and business spheres. Dr Mahathir's extensive tenure in office has made him a central figure in Malaysian politics, with his family now facing scrutiny amid broader anti-corruption initiatives. As the investigation unfolds, it raises questions about accountability, transparency, and the rule of law in the country's governance.
