In a recent development, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad's sons, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, have been given a 30-day extension to declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), marking a significant development in an ongoing investigation.
Confirmation of the extension was provided by the duo's lawyer, Muhammad Nizamuddin Abdul Hamid, who stated that notices from the MACC were obtained earlier in the day.
The saga began on January 18 when Mirzan, the elder of Dr. Mahathir's children, was summoned by the MACC to assist in an investigation into his wealth. Under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009, he was required to declare all movable and immovable assets, both domestic and international, within a 30-day timeframe.
Similarly, Tan Sri Mokhzani, Dr. Mahathir's younger son, found himself under scrutiny and was also instructed to declare his assets to the MACC within the same period. Investigations into Mokhzani were initiated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Despite these directives, the MACC had not received any response from Mirzan or Mokhzani as of February 6. This prompted warnings from the commission that failure to comply could result in prosecution.
In response, on February 8, Mirzan and Mokhzani issued a press release urging the MACC to exercise patience, citing the formidable task of gathering information spanning 43 years, from 1981 onwards, within such a brief timeframe.
The extension granted to Dr. Mahathir's sons provides them with additional time to fulfill the requirements outlined by the MACC. It underscores the complexity of the investigation and the challenges associated with compiling comprehensive asset declarations spanning several decades.
This development also sheds light on the broader issue of accountability and transparency among public officials and their families. As prominent figures in Malaysian society, the actions of Dr. Mahathir's sons are subject to heightened scrutiny, particularly in matters concerning financial disclosure and integrity.
