KUALA LUMPUR – The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is confident that hosting the 2027 Sea Games will benefit the country’s political, economic, and sporting dimensions.
The OCM, as the custodian of multi-sport events in Malaysia, expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government today for agreeing to host the biennial Games three years from now.
“We warmly welcome the decision to host the 34th Sea Games in Malaysia in 2027, seeing it as a significant opportunity to revitalise the sports industry,” OCM said in an official statement.
“The OCM recognises that hosting the Games for the seventh time in Malaysia will bring benefits across political, economic, and sporting dimensions, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the nation.
“We extend our gratitude to the Malaysian government for agreeing to host the 2027 edition. This decision underscores Malaysia’s commitment to promoting sports and fostering regional cooperation.”
On Wednesday, the Youth and Sports Ministry confirmed that the Malaysian government had agreed to host the 2027 Sea Games.
The decision was made following a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang also committing to assist with the hosting.
Malaysia last hosted the Games in 2017, when the country emerged as the overall champion, securing 145 gold medals, 92 silver, and 86 bronze.
In 2022, the Sea Games Federation (SEAGF) unanimously granted Malaysia, through OCM as the National Olympic Committee (NOC), the right to host the 2027 SEA Games.
This decision aligns with Thailand and Singapore’s hosting of the Games in 2025 and 2029, respectively.
Previously, Malaysia had hosted the Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) and Sea Games in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2017. – August 29, 2024
