A major tragedy was narrowly averted after a fire broke out in the computer science lab at Kurukshetra University during an ongoing practical examination on Friday.

The fire reportedly started after an air conditioner in the computer science department lab exploded. More than 20 students were attending a practical session in the lab when the incident occurred. The room was filled with smoke within minutes. No injuries were reported.

Several computers, furniture items and other electronic equipment were badly damaged in the fire.

Chander Kant, Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science and Applications, who was present in the lab, said, “The lab has suffered extensive damage after a fire broke out following a blast in the AC. Students were present in the lab for their practical examinations, but fortunately no one was injured. More than 20 students were safely evacuated and shifted to another lab.”

“Efforts were initially made to control the fire, but it spread rapidly. Fire tenders were later pressed into service and the flames were brought under control. Three air conditioners, several computers, furniture and other equipment were damaged in the incident,” he added.

Maha Singh Poonia, Director of Public Relations at the university, said, “All the students were evacuated safely. The incident occurred suddenly. All necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff on the campus.”
