A batch of artisan chocolates sold in the United States has been recalled after a labelling error failed to disclose the presence of walnuts. The products were distributed both in-store and online, reaching consumers in dozens of states.

The recall affects specific collections produced byFrench Broad Chocolates, with authorities warning of potential health risks for people with nut allergies. No illnesses have been reported, though customers are being advised to take precautionary action.

The issue centres on a mismatch between product contents and accompanying descriptions, raising concerns about allergen transparency in speciality food products. According to information published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall applies to items sold over a limited period in April 2026.

Labelling Error Leads to Allergen Risk

The affected products are part of the Bette’s Bake Sale Bonbon Collection, sold in boxes of six, 12, and 24 pieces. According to the FDA notice, only items with batch numbers 260414 and 260417 are included in the recall.

The problem stems from a printed tasting guide included in the packaging. According to French Broad Chocolates, the insert mistakenly switched the descriptions for two bonbons: Walnut Fudge and Peach Cobbler. As a result, a chocolate containing walnuts was incorrectly identified, potentially exposing consumers with allergies to an undeclared ingredient.

The company stated that it became aware of the issue on 20 April 2026, when a team member identified the labelling discrepancy. According to the recall notice, the Walnut Fudge bonbon contains walnuts, a tree nut allergen that must be clearly declared under food safety regulations.

People with a walnut allergy or severe sensitivity may face serious health risks if they consume such products unknowingly. According to reports, the company acknowledged that allergic reactions in these cases could be severe. Despite the potential risk, the company confirmed that no illnesses had been reported in connection with the affected batches at the time of the recall announcement.

Distribution Scope and Consumer Guidance

The chocolates were sold between 14 April and 20 April 2026 through retail outlets in Asheville, North Carolina, and via the company’s website. According to the FDA, online orders were shipped to customers in 40 states as well as the District of Columbia.

This wide distribution has increased the scope of the recall, as products may still be in consumers’ homes across the country. According to Good Housekeeping, the recall highlights how even small labelling errors in niche or artisanal products can carry broader public health implications.

Customers who have purchased the affected items are advised not to consume them if they have a tree nut allergy. The company has urged such individuals to return the chocolates to the place of purchase for a full refund or to dispose of them safely.

French Broad Chocolates has also provided a customer service contact for further enquiries, available during standard business hours. According to the company’s statement, this measure is intended to address consumer concerns and manage the recall process efficiently.

The incident reflects ongoing challenges in food labelling accuracy, particularly in products with multiple components or detailed descriptions. While no adverse health events have been recorded, the recall serves as a reminder of the importance of clear and accurate allergen information in food packaging.
