A nationwide recall has been issued for a popular chocolate bonbon assortment after a labelling error raised concerns over undeclared allergens. The affected products were distributed across dozens of states, prompting warnings for consumers with specific food sensitivities.

The issue centres on a misidentified ingredient in a printed guide included with the chocolates, which could lead to accidental consumption of walnuts. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall was initiated after the discrepancy was discovered internally.

Labelling Error Triggers Recall across Multiple States

The recall concerns Bette’s Bake Sale Bonbon Collection produced by French Broad Chocolates PBC, based in Asheville, North Carolina. According to the FDA, the products may contain undeclared walnuts, posing a risk to individuals with allergies to tree nuts.

The affected chocolates were distributed between 14 April and 20 April 2026 through retail stores in Asheville and via online orders shipped to 41 states. These include large markets such as California, New York and Texas, as well as smaller states like Vermont and Wyoming.

The problem originated from a misprint in the tasting notes included in the packaging. According to the company’s announcement, the Walnut Fudge bonbon was incorrectly labelled as Peach Cobbler, with the two entries effectively switched. This means consumers relying on the guide could unknowingly consume a product containing walnuts.

The recall applies to 6-piece, 12-piece and 24-piece boxes with batch numbers 260414 and 260417, with best-before dates ranging from 22 June to 30 June 2026. The chocolates were packaged in paper boxes, making identification dependent largely on the batch codes and included inserts.

No Reported Illnesses but Serious Allergy Risks Remain

No illnesses have been reported so far, yet the potential consequences remain significant. According to the FDA, tree nuts are among the nine major food allergens identified in the United States, alongside milk, eggs, peanuts and others.

Reactions to such allergens can vary widely. They may include relatively mild symptoms such as hives or swelling, or escalate into severe responses requiring urgent medical attention. The recall notice states that individuals with a walnut allergy face the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if the product is consumed.

Consumers who have purchased the affected chocolates are advised either to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The company has also provided customer service contact details for further enquiries, as outlined in the official announcement.

This incident follows other recent recalls linked to undeclared allergens. According to reports, a trail mix product sold in several Midwestern states was recalled earlier in the week due to the presence of undeclared wheat and soy. A separate recall involving beverages sold at Wawa stores last month cited undeclared milk as the issue.

These cases reflect a recurring challenge in food safety oversight, where labelling accuracy plays a critical role in consumer protection. Even minor errors in packaging or documentation can carry disproportionate risks for individuals with allergies, particularly when products are widely distributed.
