MAKATI City was named the first city in the Philippines and Southeast Asia to receive a citation in the developing countries category of the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) 2026, Mayor Nancy Binay announced Thursday.
The recognition was conferred during the OPCC awards night on June 30 at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference in Germany, where WWF honored the top-performing cities among more than 380 participants from 51 countries in the 2025-2026 challenge cycle.
Binay said the award was proof of Makati’s climate initiatives anchored on data-driven policies and partnerships with residents, villages, and the business sector.
“To be named a Global Winner is an honor we accept on behalf of every Makati resident who has supported our climate programs, from our barangays to our business community. This recognition affirms that Makati’s approach to climate action, grounded in data, policy, and genuine partnership with our residents, is working,” the mayor said.
Binay added that the award will motivate the city to further strengthen its climate programs.
Makati previously bagged the National Winner title in the OPCC 2024 cycle and has since pursued greenhouse gas reduction targets aligned with climate science while maintaining environmental disclosures through the CDP-ICLEI Track platform, where it has earned A-List recognition for three consecutive years.
