Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has voiced concern over the growing competition among political leaders eager to be named as candidates for Malaysia’s top post, cautioning that such ambitions are meaningless without securing electoral victory.

In a recent blog entry, Dr Mahathir said he was puzzled by the rush among individuals to position themselves as prime ministerial hopefuls, stressing that no one can assume the role without first commanding a parliamentary majority. He pointed out that any party aiming for the premiership must secure at least 112 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, a feat he described as nearly impossible for any single party to achieve under the current political climate.

According to him, even before reaching that threshold, the practical challenge lies in fielding enough candidates across constituencies while also facing competition from rival parties. Without a clear majority, Dr Mahathir argued, those promoting themselves as prime ministerial candidates were engaging in a futile exercise.

He urged political leaders to redirect their focus towards strengthening Malay unity, which he believes is the only realistic path to victory in national elections. Only once a coalition secures enough seats, he said, should the question of who becomes prime minister be decided.

Dr Mahathir further emphasised that leadership roles should not be treated as entitlements or personal ambitions but rather as responsibilities to be earned after collective success at the polls. He noted that individuals with genuine talent and capability would naturally have the opportunity to contest for the premiership once their party or coalition had achieved electoral strength.

His remarks come amid heightened speculation and manoeuvring within opposition and government ranks over potential successors and future leadership arrangements. With political instability still shaping Malaysia’s landscape, Dr Mahathir’s call reflects his long-standing view that unity and strategic cooperation, particularly among Malay-based parties, remain essential for achieving power.

By dismissing the premature race for prime ministerial candidacy, Dr Mahathir has once again reminded the political class that numbers in Parliament — not personal ambition — ultimately decide who governs Malaysia.
